Sensuron Releases Summit: The First Fiber Optic Sensing Platform that Consolidates Multiple Measurement Technologies Into One
New cost-effective fiber optic sensing platform gives real-time access to data allowing engineers to detect design flaws earlier
AUSTIN, TX, March 8, 2016 – Sensuron, a global provider of compact fiber optic sensing (FOS) systems, today announced the launch of Summit, the first fiber optic sensing platform to provide fully distributed sensing with the ability to combine multiple measurement technologies into a single platform.
With comprehensive and real-time access to data, engineers are more readily equipped to detect design flaws earlier – saving resources, increasing efficiencies and preventing costly failures after a product has launched.
Suitable for design, test, mechanical and stress applications across the automotive, aerospace and energy industries, Summit is the most sophisticated FOS technology available on the market today.
By allowing engineers to replace a number of measurement technologies, like strain gauges and thermocouples, into a single platform, the new system provides a simple, but comprehensive and cost-effective upgrade to existing market solutions.
With distributed sensing capabilities, engineers have access to better data and can detect design flaws earlier in product development.
“The benefits of the Summit FOS platform far exceed existing market alternatives,” said Michael Heflin, CEO of Sensuron. “By investing in Summit, an organization can improve efficiencies by consolidating their testing and monitoring equipment. This simplifies workflows, reduces redundancy and enables organizations to purchase one platform for multiple projects.”
The Summit platform offers numerous benefits, including:
- More Data – The data density provided by fully distributed sensing capabilities offer a comprehensive look at the health of an application, enhancing model validation.
- Greater Sensing Length – The Summit platform offers over 6 times more sensing length than comparable alternatives.
- Adjustability – Unlike other FOS systems, the sensor starts where you want it to so you don’t have to lose sensing length to get the fiber to your application.
- Flexibility – With multi-sensing capabilities and real-time access to data, Summit can be embedded in first-to-market applications, enabling and enhancing innovations.
- Multi-Sensing – Summit can replace multiple technologies in a single platform by simultaneously monitoring strain, temperature, deflection, 3D shape, liquid level, and magnetic fields on multiple channels.
While other FOS suppliers require users to replace existing equipment with an entirely new system for projects requiring different sensing abilities, Summit’s simple upgrade model allows customers to purchase additional capabilities at a fraction of the cost of a new system.
Customers can upgrade the speed or sensing length of their systems as well as purchase deflection and 3D shape sensing capabilities. Upgrades can be added at any time, so if an additional project has different requirements, customers can adapt their system to better meet their needs.
Other benefits of Summit include over 1000 sensors per fiber, the ability to multiplex all channels simultaneously, and the ease of cutting new lengths of fiber for additional projects compared to ordering custom fiber.
What is Compact Fiber Optic Sensing?
FOS technologies collect and analyze material and structural data based on changes in the way light moves down a fiber optic cable. FOS technologies extract environmental parameters such as strain, loads, temperature gradients, as well as deflection and 3D shape sensing when light is passed through a network of hair-thin fibers.
By measuring the changes in how light reflects back given various changes in these parameters, FOS technology can provide real-time monitoring of applications, helping to ensure the integrity, efficiency and long-term durability of equipment.
